Our Story

HOW IT STARTED

After working hard to earn my Education degree the job hunt was on! I landed a job at a public primary school in Johannesburg and was shocked to see 36 learners on my class list - the reality for many South African teachers. That number later increased to 40! The school serviced children from a disadvantaged area and teaching at this school was a challenge to say the least. With only one half an hour admin period a week and 40 little ones depending on me to teach them how to read and write as well as extramural involvement, discipline and support I was starting to feel very burnt out. Although it felt like I was thrown into the deep end, during my time at this school I learnt how important it is to be prepared and organised as a teacher.

I later moved on to teach at a public high school and I truly loved my job. Teaching Geography to older students was definitely a better fit for me. As a high school teacher I was teaching 9 classes and didn't have my own classroom so I had to be on the ball! I had struggled to find a planner that was suitable for my needs. I wanted to have everything I needed in one place. I wanted to see my whole week at a glance AND what I was teaching in each lesson. I had bought a planner and customised it week by week, but I knew I needed a more permanent solution.

And as they say the rest is history...

TAKING THE LEAP OF FAITH

I created a teacher planner for myself to use in 2021. I had NO intention of starting a business. When my colleagues saw my planner I got a few requests to sell them. I posted on social media to see if this was something other teachers would be interested in and it was clear that there was a need. The planner worked so well for me and when I went on maternity leave in July 2021 I used that time to design the Pick a Planner website and made it official! At the end of 2021 I took a leap of faith and I resigned from my teaching job to stay home with my daughter. Over 2022 and 2023 I was working 2 part-time jobs and trying to build Pick a Planner with a toddler in tow. It was definitely a juggle but in 2023 I saw a huge increase in sales and knew that there was potential for Pick a Planner to become a brand that teachers know and love. By the end of 2023 I stopped all other work to focus on Pick a Planner.

WHERE WE ARE NOW

Over the last 4 years we have expanded our product range and we've grown exponentially. It's still just me around here pulling all nighters and begging friends and family to help when things get crazy, but hopefully there will be some new faces on this page in the near future!

As a teacher, I experienced the countless hours of prep and marking, sleepless nights worrying about my students' home lives and my personal life taking the back seat to get through schoolwork. I know how much effort you put in and the invaluable work you do behind the scenes that doesn't often go noticed or appreciated. At the heart of what we do at Pick a Planner is a desire is to put teachers, who give so much, first for a change. So here we are, equipping you with beautiful, practical tools that make your life easier and bring joy to your classroom. Pick a Planner is not just a business, but a community where you can be yourself, be encouraged and connect with other teachers.

Thank you for being here and for supporting my crazy, ambitious and often scary dream!
